Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) was an English author who made lasting contributions as a poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. His "Dictionary of the English Lanugage" in 1755 was viewed as the pre-eminent British dictionary for over 150 years. Thomas Babington Macaulay, 1st Baron Macaulay PC (1800-1859) was a British poet, historian and Whig politician.
