Helen's boss, Harry Ryder, refused to fully comply with the conditions of the will, and set her an almost impossible assignment to gain time and her promotion. Using every ounce of her wits, she reluctantly set out to conquer the odds against her, and the biggest stumbling block of them all, proved to be - Duncan MacFarlane, - a dull, pompous, old Laird, who was the elected executor of Mairie Campbell's will and the man who was to marry a former local girl, Alex Craig, in order to foreclose on an ancient land deal. The mystery deepens when Alex Craig, now an American Hollywood actress, makes a determined effort to be adverse towards Helen. She maliciously challenges Helen to expose her relationship to the very private Duncan at a Press Conference for the opening of her current film, but Helen's decision at the conference was to be her ultimate downfall.
