It's summer in Rathmoye and when a stranger appears photographing the mourners at Mrs Connulty's funeral it doesn't go unnoticed. Florian Kilderry couldn't know that the Connultys are said to own half the town: he has come to Rathmoye to photograph the remains of its burnt-out cinema. But Ellie falls in love with Florian, although he's planning to leave Ireland and begin anew after what he considers to be his failed life...and a dangerously reckless attachment develops between them.
