Everyone expects Pat to spend his life in the US Army, but a political dispute puts an end to his promising career. Pat gamely reinvents himself as a home builder and settles into a comfortable all-American life in North Carolina with his wife and four children. After the 2007 financial crisis, though, Pat and his wife split up, and he realizes that his dream was little more than an illusion.
So Pat moves to a place known for its mirages of fabulous wealth and personal power-the Middle East. As he bounces from Afghanistan to the United Arab Emirates, he begins amassing his own fortune.
The mirage is becoming real. But then trouble finds him again. Pat has been performing clandestine operations for an old army buddy, Mike Guthrie, who's now a CIA agent. One of Pat's missions attracts the attention of a criminal cabal connected to ISIS, and the terrorists become obsessed with tracking him down.
Pat goes on the offensive and travels the globe, determined to cut the cabal off at its roots. Does he have the skills to take down an international organization of sociopaths and killers, or is he once again destined for disaster?
