Publisher's Synopsis

The Slovenian capital Ljubljana is historically and architecturally one of the most interesting cities in Europe - shaped by a checkered history from antiquity to the present and the geographical location between Italy, Austria and the Balkans. The Roman settlement of Emona became the garrison town of Laibach in the Habsburg Empire under Italian and Austrian influence. Ljubljana was the name of the city as the north-westernmost provincial capital in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and later in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia before becoming the capital of Slovenia in 1991. All epochs of its history were and are reflected in the architecture and art of the city. Italian baroque, Viennese Art Nouveau and socialist modernism combine to form a unique ensemble. Slovenia's most famous modernist architect, Joe Plenik, shaped the cityscape, and his student Edvard Ravnikar left his mark on the city just as little. On the one hand, the young generation of architects stands by their tradition and at the same time borrows from international modernism. The descriptions in the book are illustrated by numerous colored illustrations.
