Publisher's Synopsis

Although not a term in common use, 'floating' support has become an accepted alternative to support accommodation, and offers support tied to the individual rather than the property where they live. This report, based on interviews with service users, presents a profile of the aspirations and experiences of people who have used floating support services, designed to enable them to live independently in the community. In order to reach a broader understanding of users' views of 'floating' support, the researchers cover key questions: ·What are users' aspirations regarding their lifestyle, including their degree of independence and their participation in the community? ·What kind of support do people consider that they require to fulfil their aspirations? ·How much choice did they have on the support they received? ·How successful did people believe that floating support had been in meeting their aspirations generally, and in promoting independence and participation in the community? The main funding sources for floating support are examined, along with the ways in which the funding sources apply and how users in the study perceived the arrangements for their support. Conclusions are drawn together for the benefit of providers and funding agencies, and for future policy review.
