Alone in a small Tennessee town, lovely, eccentric unwed mother Stephanie "Stevie" Sanders, an amateur wholistic veterinarian owns and operates Little Souls, a cemetery for roadkill animals as well as local deceased pets. Her abiding love for all creatures places her at violent odds with a community, where for most residents hunting is a religion and the Bible the inerrant word of God. Estranged from Ted, her unreconstructed Confederate father, a man desperate to discover who in his mind has dishonored his daughter thereby indelibly staining the venerable Sander's name, Stevie endeavors to raise her young daughter by herself, hemmed in by Ted's virulent hostility and the conservative community's disapproval of all she believes in. Without George, an elderly African American who had inherited 10 acres of Ted Sander's dilapidated ancestral plantation, Stevie will face exile and the inevitable destruction of her dreams of a brighter future.
