This anthology provides students with a comprehensive sampling of literature in three genres: fiction, poetry and drama. This new edition features 18 new stories, 113 new poems, and nine new plays, and places greater emphasis on women and minority writers in all genres. The fiction section consists of 54 stories. The poetry section contains a new chapter "Poetry and Personal Identity" and the drama section now features two Shakespearian selections, "Othello" and "Hamlet". The writing supplement at the back of the anthology now contains a section entitled "Critical Approaches to Literature" that explains and provides examples of nine major approaches to studying literature. The "Writer in Depth" section focuses on Flannery O'Connor.
