Publisher's Synopsis

Essays on the literature of Central Europe and the influence of National Socialism and Marxism. This Festschrift honoring the distinguished scholar Markéta Goetz-Stankiewicz (University of British Columbia), who was recently awarded the prestigious Boeschenstein Medal, provides new contributions on Central Europe written byrenowned specialists. The primary focus of the volume is Central Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall, but that signal event is perforce viewed in the context of earlier historical forces. In different ways the contributors to this book have taken up the theme of the literature of Central Europe in the shadow of the two dominant ideologies of this century: National Socialism and Marxist socialism. The perspectives from which they have approachedthis broad topic are extremely varied, as some authors treat events and trends that preceded the years in which the two systems collapsed, others deal with the period after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The book also contains a partial bibliography of Goetz-Stankiewicz's publications.
