Publisher's Synopsis

In LIMBO, part history and part memoir, Mike Kendellen chronicles one of the most remarkable international refugee programs ever, the Vietnamese boat people saga. After the Vietnam War concluded in April 1975, refugees arrived in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong for the next sixteen years. Mike recounts how, after serving in the Peace Corps, he ended up in Malaysia and at Galang Refugee Camp in Indonesia with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, national governments, the US Department of State, the Vietnamese, NGOs, and lawyers amid the Cold War. As an aid worker, he taught English and directed the education programs. After Indonesia, he traveled to Vietnam to understand its vocational training structure and negotiate with government officials to start a project in the Mekong Delta for those returning after spending years in camps.
