Clementine Beatrice Rose is nearly 14 years old. She is an Irish orphan with big plans and even bigger ideals, yet she dies before she can achieve them. She arrives at a chasm that separates Heaven and Hell, where she is told the Book of Life has assigned her to Hell, but St. Peter will not show her the proof. With the prospect of an eternity in Hell, she steals the Book of Life and jumps. She knows that entry is wrong, she just needs to find a way to prove it, but she cannot do it alone. She befriends four children, Clara, a girl from Victorian London, Kish, a boy from the ancient world, Illa, a girl from medieval times, and a special Russian Prince, Alexei Romanov. She needs their help to thwart attacking beasts and armies, bribe officials, and temper her rage whilst she toils with Hell. Unbeknownst to her, people on Earth are helping her; with all their help there might just be a chance she can go to Heaven, but along the way she learns that it just not her that deserves Heaven, but all children. She is told that to undo such a wrong she must traverse the Layers of Hell and put forth her argument to the rulers of the underworld, but the nine Layers of Hell want nothing more than to stop her. Can she win her freedom? Can she change the laws of the afterlife, and can she still achieve her plans and her dreams? Hell is not a place for children, and Clementine is amongst the thick of it.
