Publisher's Synopsis
For Light's Third Volume, prompts will identify some stages in creative production. The second prompt considers the meanings of what it means to "labor."In the West, art and labor have an old, vexed history that persists in art's subtexts. The old artisanal tradition sometimes contended that labor is what unskilled, poorly trained people do. At worst, it was manual labor, at best, "technical" or "mechanical" work. To fashion an object that was both perfectly functional and graceful because it is pleasing to use was to "craft" or simply to practice one's learned "art." Whether symbolically or figuratively, labor is a word that can be illustrated simply or with deep complexity. In short, dealing with ideas of how and whether art and labor connect is heavy lifting.
