Granddaughter of Queen Victoria, Marie was born in Eastwell Park, in the county of Kent, England, daughter of Duke Alfred of Edinburg and Duchess Maria Alexandrovna. The education she received in the Victorian epoch marked her whole life. When she married, in 1893, the crown prince of the Kingdom of Romania, Ferdinand of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, the English princess forever joined her destiny to that of Romania.
