This story takes place in the country of Aplos, where the entire population is divided into two groups, necromancers and druids. Maera, is neither of these. She later ventures out into the woods in order to obtain some more food that she plans to cook later for her longtime friend, Viola. She is successful in killing a cow, however, she is caught by the supposed owner of the cow. Who is a high ranking Druid. This Druid captures Maera and takes her to the capitol to be tried for her crimes. The punishment often being death by hanging. The leaders of Aplos have other plans for her. She can either go through with her sentence, or work for them as their mercenary, she of course agrees to the latter. How will she earn back her freedom? And what will she learn about herself and the state of Aplos along the way?
