Before television, computers, cell phones, and the internet, information was scarce in the Southeastern Kentucky City of Cumberland in the 1940s and 1950s, so a young child gleaned his information from movies, comic books, word of mouth, and elementary school in an effort to understand life and its meaning. He thought that the movies in particular, which he dearly loved, were the portrayals of real life itself.
