After a bloody sea battle with a French frigate, HMS Amazon puts into Gibraltar for repairs and Acting Lieutenant John Fury has his promotion confirmed. But with promotion comes a transfer away from the Amazon and new challenges. Initially working as the fifth lieutenant on the 74-gun man-of-war Fortitude, Fury then finds himself transferred to a brig, his first independent command, then to a gun ship and finally to defend a prominent fort ashore. Hard pressed, Fury has more to lose than most, as he has fallen in love with a pretty French girl, Sophie Gourrier. Somehow, as the British defence crumbles, he must rescue his men and Sophie from the doomed city.
