Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Library of Religious Knowledge, Vol. 3: Journal of Tyerman and Bennet

The Malays are nearly as numerous as the Chinese. They are, however, very differently occupied, being employed by the Dutch and English inhabitants m all kinds of drudgery. Many are porters, others domestic servants, and some of them artizans, jobbing in carpenters' and blacksmiths' work, &c. Their wages are very low, and they are altogether a servile race. In features and forin they much resemble the South Sea Islanders, who are probably descended fi'om the remote ancestors of these degra ded beings.
