Not inconsiderabla part in the history of the Church of England in the stormy days of King John, and left his mark in many ways both structural and disciplinary on the Biocasa of Lincoln. Of his works the greatest and most valuable was the general and formal rescue from monkish greed and selfishncos of a portion of the tithes of the churches which by one method or another the religious had appropriated. This ha affected by the regular establishment of Vicarages. How Bishop Hugh was able to do this, and on what foundation the arrangement was built, will be explained below, where a sketch of the history of Vicarages is given. But first wa desire to say something of the personality of the Bishop. When the fearful curse of the Church was fulminated by Pope Innocent against the realm of England, and was brought to England by the Bishops of London, Ely, and Worcester, it was necessary that it should be published in all the Dioceses. There ware three Bishops in the land - Bath and Walls, Norwich, and Winch ester - who would not suffer it to be published in their Biocasas, and who thus held to the King rather than to the Popa. The Biocasa of Lincoln had been without a Bishop for two years, since the death of William da Blois (may, and there would therefore ba no one to defend the clergy and the people from the effects of the curse. Under these circumstances the King andeavoured to anticipata and ward off the mischief by issuing the Letters Patent following The King to all clerks and laymcn in the Biocasa of Lincoln. Greeting.
