Publisher's Synopsis

LGBT PRIDE: A History of Fighting Prejudice Against Homosexuality
LGBT Pride can trace its origins way back to the mid-1960s.
Amongst the emerging hippy culture and in the wake of the assassination of John F Kennedy, members of the LGBT community began to feel the need to collect together to protest about the discrimination they were experiencing. As with so many large institutions, things started small. Just a handful of protestors turned up for those early gatherings.
But from small seeds, giant trees grow.
Today LGBT Pride is a worldwide institution, attracting people not just from its own community. It is both diverse and collective, a loose conglomeration of individual groups coming each putting on their own events under one heading.
Carnivals, the Rainbow Flag to the fore, bring joy to a celebration of all that is identifiable with the world of the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender and Querying people.
The clue is in the name. Pride. Pride to be who you are. Pride in the ability to celebrate that. Pride to be able to take a full and proper place in society, free from prejudice, discrimination, hate and injustice.
That ultimate destination has still to be reached. But at least it is now close enough to be appearing on the sign posts for large swathes of the world.
This is the story of LGBT Pride, and a history of the bravery and activism that got us here today.
