Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Letters of George Birkbeck Hill, D. C. L., LL. D: Hon. Fellow of Pembroke College, Oxford

From the time when he was a lad of thirteen he was a great letter-writer, and the habit was one which stayed by him to the end. From these letters a fairly consecutive narrative of fifty years can be constructed. Something they need here and there to explain or correct them, some brief introduction, also, to place them in their right setting, but they are in the main enough in themselves to show what manner of man was Birkbeck Hill, from what he grew, how developed, and what became. Certainly, this narrative which they relate is one which, lacking though it be in any thing like stirring incident, yet possesses just that note of intimacy which Birkbeck Hill prized so highly. It may be that, in a busy and bustling world, there yet remain some quiet students of quiet lives who will say, as they turn over the following pages, Blessings on those who publish Letters.
