Wollstonecraft went on her tour of these three Nordic countries to retrieve a stolen treasure ship for her lover Gilbert Imlay. She thought this would repair their relationship, but it turned out to be a rouse, and he abandoned her. She created a book that is equal parts travelogue, and equal parts gripping memoir. It was extremely popular during her life, but after she died her reputation was destroyed because society judged her harshly for her unorthodox behaviour.
