Philip Wieting, the Evangelical Lutheran Churches of St. John's at Durlach, and St. Peter's at New Rhinebeck in Sharon; And Others
The writer is not opposed to a Confession of Faith in general, nor to the Augsburg Confession in particular; whenever it can be adopted literally and in all its length and breadth, ex animo. But he does object to this 'substantially correct' adoption. It amounts to nothing, unless it lays a snare for the conscience of the simple hearted and honest man, or opens a wide door for the free ingress and egress of the dishonest and heterodox, and prepares the way for all sorts of difficulties and dissentions in the church. If one man may reject the article upon the Lord's Supper from his creed, and another that upon Baptism, a third may do the same in regard to original sin, and so we may proceed until not a single article of the poor confession is left standing. The whole of this para graph is true, and that is more than can be said of the Augsburg Confession. The writer of the above article, was a member of a committee appointed by the General Synod, to prepare a liturgy for the use of the Church.
