This number is still increasing, due to the long latency period of this disease, and according to one cumulative estimate something in the region of 25,000 Scots will have died through exposure to asbestos by 2025. Asbestosis is now one of the most deadly occupational diseases, and by any standards this constitutes a major tragedy of epidemic proportions.
