Tapis sous le chaume croisé, nous vivions dans la plus grande abondance; la pâtée des oiseaux étrangers assemblés dans ce jardin fournissait à mon père et à ma tendre mère une mine inépuisable pour nous nourrir, et la prévoyante Pierrette avait choisi la maison du Marabout à cause de la proximité de l'eau, qui lui permettait de trouver facilement au bord les vers dont nous avons impérieusement besoin pendant notre jeune âge, surtout au moment de la croissance de nos plumes. J'avais pour compagnons de nid deux frères et deux soeurs, et nos parents n'attendaient plus que quelques jours pour nous montrer l'usage de nos ailes. Hélas! qu'il y a loin de la coupe aux lèvres!Une nuit, le vent s'éleva sous la pression de l'orage. Tapis au fond de notre nid, sous les ailes de nos parents, nous tremblions aux lueurs répétées des éclairs et sous les chaudes rafales qui ébranlaient la maisonnette sur ses fondements. Transis de peur, mouillés par des torrents d'eau qui se faisaient jour à travers les pailles et ruisselaient sur notre nid, nous nous serrions les uns contre les autres sans oser même pousser un cri.
