Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Le Roi Des Montagnes: Adapted and Edited

As a man About seems to have been essentially un amiable; he exercised his satirical faculty too freely, and consequently made numerous enemies. As a satirical writer he belongs almost to the first rank. He has been frequently compared to Voltaire, whom he resembles in the easy and unforced character of his wit, but, like Voltaire, he is unconvincing and insincere. He is an acute but superficial Observer, and, like most satirists, is always ready to sacrifice truth to epigram, and to substitute ridicule for argument. His prose has the finish and clearness which we find in the works of Paul Louis Courier, with little of the laboured paradox characteristic of up-to-date writers. M. Gustave Lanson, one of the most acute among modern French critics, describes About in the following words Tout vol tairien d'esprit et de style, conteur exquis et charmant causeur, d'intelligence plus habile que forte, et plus en surface qu'en profondeur, impertinent, tapageur et gamin.
