Publisher's Synopsis
The studies presented in this volume of New Directions forCommunity Colleges aim to foster a better understanding of theways in which community colleges provide Latino students witheducational access and opportunity.
State and federal policy has increasingly looked to thecommunity college to educate Latinos-the largest minoritygroup in the United States-and other students traditionallyunderrepresented in higher education. Indeed, Latinos enroll incommunity colleges at rates higher than those for any other racialor ethnic group. Although research has been done to study theinfluence of various contributors to Latino opportunity, such asimmigration policy, language, and academic opportunity, theprofound and confounding influence of these factors remainsunderexplored. This volume provides and underscores the importanceof serious scholarship towards this vital set of institutions andtheir students.
