On the island of Mindanao in the Philippines, New Year's Day is a time to celebrate. Danilo wants to build his very own bamboo cannon called a lantaka. He takes his brother's sharp bolo knife and sets out into the jungle to look for bamboo. After a fall, he returns home disappointed and upset. What will it take for Danilo to learn the skills needed to build a lantaka? Will his brother Manuel help him? If he works hard and practices using the bolo knife safely, will he get to build his own lantaka next year?
