Landsliding is a hazard that many people in Great Britain fail to take seriously. Large tracts of the country appear too flat to threaten major instability, while those areas which do contain high, steep slopes are generally sparsely populated so the risks appear low. However, appearances can be deceptive. Not only are there numerous reported landslides each year which cause damage and sometimes death, but there are also many thousands of old landslides which can move again if disturbed. This book aims to describe the nature of the threat presented by landsliding in the UK for the non-specialist. Its purpose is to provide an informed, readable and relatively non-technical appreciation of landsliding in Britain based on current knowledge. The objective is to provide an explanation of what the various types of landslide look like, where they occur, why they occur, what is known about the major phases of movement in the past, their impact on the British economy and the ways in which landslide-imposed costs can be limited in the future.
