Aimant son m�tier, remplissant scrupuleusement sa fonction, d'humeur assez morose. Un beau jour, son ami le major Hugo fut nomm� rapporteur du premier Conseil de guerre. Ce fut une bonne fortune pour le greffier. Tous deux habi taient sous le m�me toit � l'h�tel de Ville, et tous deux, c�libataires, ils unirent leurs deux solitudes. On s'en tendait fort bien, mais a une seule condition c'�tait de ne pas parler politique Leopold Hugo �tait republi cain, Pierre Foucher �tait royaliste. Tous deux �taient jeunes, tous deux avaient une situation, ce qui �tait une excellente condition pour se marier. On parlait du pass�. Pierre Foucher, ayant perdu ses parents, avait �t� �lev� par son oncle, chanoine au Mans, et avait fait ses �tudes chez les Oratoriens, a Nantes. Ce nom de Nantes provoqua un sursaut de L�opold Hugo. 11 lui rappelait d'abord la guerre de Vend�e, mais surtout un plus doux etplus charmant souvenir celui d'une jeune fille dont il �tait violemment �pris.
