Publisher's Synopsis
This volume aims to fill a gap in knowledge on the Umbria stretch (Orte-Perugia) of the via Amerina. Firstly, the book proposes a reorganisation of previous research, mainly consisting of studies not specifically dedicated to the road. Then, dividing the route in sections (Orte-Amelia, Amelia-Todi, Todi-Perugia), the work examines all sources (archaeological, itinerary, cartographical, archival etc.) to contextualise the infrastructure and the territories it crosses. Based on this and the data acquired from targeted surface surveys, the book proposes a new interpretation of the via Amerina: in particular, it presents the hypothesis that the road lead just to Ameria, that it was built by Rome in the 1st century BC, and that the link with the northern territories was established by a western branch of the via Flaminia.
