A coup s�r, toutes ces t�ches sont urgentes et elles sont belles et il faut bien esp�rer qu'elles nous aideront � conjurer les divisions inutiles. Si, toutefois, nous ne voulons pas qu'elles soient compromises par des proc�d�s politiques trop vieillis et par des exp�dients empiriques d�cevants, si surtout nous ne voulons pas laisser se dissiper � tous les vents les magnifiques r�sultats de notre' union sacr�e, ne convient-il pas de faire confiance � un large essor de la libert� et de la justice �gales pour tous? Car le peuple fran�ais voudra toujours, par de l� les int�r�ts, suivre les id�es et les servir. Pour cela, il nous faut la paix � l'atelier, il nous faut la paix � la campagne, la paix entre ouvriers et patrons, entre petits et grands propri�taires, la paix entre les diff�rents groupes de producteurs, entre agriculteurs et industriels, et ainsi de suite. Pour quoi? Parce que l� on sait qu'assurer la paix, c'est lib�rer le besoin naturel que l'homme a de produire et de cr�er, c'est lui rendre plus facile une action concert�e avec ceux qu'il lui est loisible de choisiret de garder comme coop�rateurs. Mais troubler la paix dans les consciences, dans l'exercice des droits de la foi et de sa compagne ins�parable, la charit�, c'est d�cha�ner le plus n�faste des conflits, celui o� les �nergies les plus tendues ne r�ussissent qu'� se neutraliser les unes les autres. On ne veut alors ni du bon, ni du meilleur, du moment o� il est pratiqu� ou propos� par ceux que l'on combat souvent sans savoir pourquoi. On encourage le mal et le plus mal et le pire pour soutenir ceux dont on a �pous� la haine aveugle dans le seul but de nier sans �tre � m�me de rien affirmer, de d�truire sans �tre � m�me d'y subs tituer rien de r�el et de durable. Puis, un trop grand nombre d'hommes, n�s cependant pour l'action, se d�couragent. Malgr� les le�ons venues de tant d'�checs, ils acceptent peu � peu, de guerre lasse, ces essais d'accaparement et de monopole, ces r�gle mentations oppressives et st�rilisantes o� l'on se d�charge tr0p volontiers sur une action imperson nelle de tout ce qui n'int�resse pas le plaisir et la tranquillit�.
