EXTRAIT: I C'était au camp de Krasnoé-Sélo, à quelques kilomètres de Pétersbourg. On finissait de dîner au mess des gardes à cheval. Les jeunes officiers avaient célébré la fête de l'un d'entre eux, et la société était montée à ce joyeux diapason qui suit les bons repas. La dernière tournée de vin de Champagne circulait autour de la table. La tente du mess, relevée d'un côté, laissait entrer les derniers rayons d'un beau soleil de juin: il pouvait être neuf heures du soir, la poussière, soulevée tout le jour par les pieds des chevaux et de l'infanterie, redescendait lentement sur la terre faisant un nimbe d'or au camp tout entier. Vers le petit théâtre d'été, où la jeunesse se désennuie de son exil militaire, roulaient de nombreuses calèches, emportant les officiers mariés avec leurs femmes; les petits drochkis, égoïstes, étroits comme un fourreau d'épée, sur lesquels perche un jeune officier, --voiturant le plus souvent un camarade sur ses genoux, faute de place pour l'asseoir à son côté, --prenaient les devants et déposaient leur fardeau sur le perron de la salle de spectacle. Cette joyeuse file d'équipages roulait incessamment de l'autre côté de la place; mais la représentation de ce soir-là ne devait pas être embellie par les casquettes blanches à liséré rouge: MM. les gardes à cheval avaient décidé de clore la soirée au mess. On y était si bien! De larges potiches de Chine ventrues laissaient échapper des bouquets en feu d'artifice; des pyramides de fruits s'entassaient dans les coupes de cristal; les tambours étaient copieusement garnis de bonbons, et de fruits confits, --tout officier de dix-huit ans est doublé d'un bébé, amateur de friandises;--de grands massifs d'arbustes à la sombre verdure cachaient les pieux qui soutenaient la tente...; Henry Gréville, de son vrai nom Alice Marie Céleste Durand née Fleury, née le 12 octobre 1842, à Paris, et morte le 26 mai 1902, à Boulogne-Billancourt, est une femme de lettres française. Biographie Fille de Jean Fleury, écrivain haguais et professeur à Paris, elle l'accompagne en Russie quand il devient lecteur en littérature française à l'université impériale de Saint-Pétersbourg. Elle y étudie les langues et les sciences avant d'y épouser en 1857, Émile Durand, professeur de droit français et amateur d'art. Elle commence à écrire dans le Journal de Saint-Pétersbourg, puis, de retour en France, en 1872, elle prend le nom de plume d'Henry Gréville, en référence au village de ses parents. Elle écrit des romans sur la société russe et publie dans la Revue des Deux Mondes, le Figaro, la Nouvelle Revue, le Journal des débats, le Temps... Auteur prolifique, s'essayant au théâtre comme aux nouvelles, à la poésie comme au roman, elle a été à son époque, un écrivain à succès. Son manuel pour l'Instruction morale et civique pour les jeunes filles a été réédité 28 fois entre 1882 et 1891. Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly lui consacre un chapitre de ses Bas bleus: C'est encore une femme, à ce qu'il paraît, ce monsieur-là ! La mascarade des pseudonymes continue... (...) Cette revenue du pays des neiges, a tout de suite percé la neige de l'indifférence publique, si dure aux débutants. Elle est une perce-neige heureuse ! Elle en a la pureté... Elle a la pureté de la plume, cette chose maintenant plus rare que le talent. Guy de Maupassant dit d'elle: De toutes les femmes de lettres de France, Mme Henry Gréville est celle dont les livres atteignent le plus d'éditions. Celle-là est surtout un conteur, un conteur gracieux et attendri. On la lit avec un plaisir doux et continu; et, quand on connaît un de ses livres, on prendra toujours volontiers les autres Elle est morte emportée par une congestion alors qu'elle suivait une cure à la clinique des docteurs Sollier de Boulogne-Billancourt.
