Publisher's Synopsis

This book is based on the first-hand experience of concentration camp survivor Dita Krauss, about a teenage girl who risked her life protecting a book during the Holocaust. Fourteen-year-old Tita was one of many inmates at Auschwitz. She had been brought here from Terezin concentration camp in Prague, accustomed to the never-ending horrors of camp life. So when the Jewish leader Hirsch asked her to keep eight books that other prisoners had smuggled in past the guards, she obliged. Thus, Tita became a librarian in the secret library of Auschwitz, responsible for ensuring the safety of these books. At the same time, she also had to protect several prisoners who were like "living books".
