L'id�e de Dieu la plus commune a pour objet des pouvoirs invisibles qui produisent 'les ph�nom�nes constants de la nature et dirigent des �v�nements particuliers pour distribuer les biens et les maux aux hommes selon qu'ils observent ou non certaines prescriptions. Cette d�finition d�passe le niveau de l'esprit purement f�tichiste pour lequel le sentiment du divin est plus obscur et re�oit toutes sortes d'applications basses et arbitraires. Cependant on reconna�t dans le feti chisme m�me uneid�e dominante, c'est l'id�e d'une cause qui a son si�ge dans une volont� cach�e, mue par des motifs, et qui ne se traduit ext�rieurement que par ses effets. Elle est donc con�ue comme une sorte de - personne. A l'extr�mit� Op pos�e de la carriere que parcourt l'esprit humain dans l'ordre religieux, l� O� se constitue une forte religion positive pro fess�e par des hommes �clair�s, on trouve encore la notion de la personnalit�, c'est - � - dire de la volont� chez un �tre dou� de connaissance, comme l'attribut de l'invisible pouvoir souve rain appel� Dieu. Cette notion peut s'affaiblir et sembler se perdre dans telle doctrine th�ologique, elle reste toujours vivante pour la religion.
