What is the significance of the body for identity? How are social differences visible (made visible) in the body and what does this have to do with social inequality? What role does the body play in politics and how do technological developments change ideas about the body and ways of experiencing it? These are the questions addressed in this introduction, which focuses on the sociological relevance of human bodies. Based on current phenomena such as social media, #BlackLivesMatter or Covid-19, terms, theories and research foci of the sociology of the body are explained and systematically traced back to the classics of the discipline.
