Publisher's Synopsis
The present study deals with German-Dutch border dialects in the Emsland and the surrounding area as well as in the Dutch province of Drente. Line-Marie Gärtner-Hohenstein investigates whether the state border there represents a dialectal break. The author asked 64 dialect speakers from four localities at different distances from the state border about the linguistic situation there. Data on dialect knowledge, dialect perception, dialect usage and dialect evaluation were collected in order to get a complex overall impression of the dialect situation of this border section - on a structural, perceptual and functional level. In addition to individual evaluations of the data, the study offers multi-perspective insights into the dialect situation of the examined border section based on data correlations.
