Publisher's Synopsis
This book is a must have for the collegiate trumpeter! The idea for this book emerged from morning practice sessions with Fred Mills, former Canadian Brass trumpeter and professor of trumpet at the University of Georgia. "Key Areas" is a play on words. In the obvious sense it simply refers to the 12 keys we use in Western music. However, "key areas" also refers to the fact that this method book covers many aspects of trumpet playing that are "key" to ones success. The main purpose of this book is to explore the most common western tonalities through all 12 keys in a way that will aid in the trumpeter's technical development and ear training. A strong aural foundation cannot be over emphasized and is a requirement for any serious musician. This book clearly lays out these fundamental building blocks, which if mastered, will be the key to unlocking musical freedom and expression. The book is organized by key area and each key goes through scale and arpeggio inversions in major, natural minor, harmonic minor, melodic minor, whole-tone, augmented, half-whole, whole-half, diminished, half-diminished seventh, minor-minor seventh, minor-major seventh, major-minor seventh, major-major-seventh, chromatic, blues, pentatonic, modes, and includes a thorough diatonic-based intervals section. Each key area ends with five common jazz progressions and five common pop progressions. Hopefully this book will serve as a tribute to Fred as well as a tool for your development. Enjoy!
