Publisher's Synopsis

Karoshi is a Japanese phrase which translates to "death from overwork". The play examines mental health issues stemming from work but also the accumulation of mental health strains from various sources. Whilst it is a Japanese term, the concept of Karoshi is present in many societies around the world. People feel pressured to look good, do well, work hard, all at the sacrifice of personal wellbeing. Mental health is a taboo subject in many parts of the world, especially in Japan. This is something everyone must deal with during their life and yet there can still be some form of shame attached to acknowledging that one's mental wellbeing may not be perfect. The play aims to normalise the conversation surrounding mental health and encourages viewers to check-in with the people around them to make sure they're OK. Join Persephone in London and Rei in Osaka as they both experience life events leading up to Karoshi.
