Kao Kalia Yang was born in the Thai refugee camp at Ban Vinai. Following the Vietnam War, hundreds of Hmong people left Laos and sought temporary safety in this camp. Given the turmoil and dislocation that surrounded Kao Kalia Yang's birth in Ban Vinai, it is important to recognize the hazardous circumstances that her family and many others suffered during this turbulent time in Southeast Asian history. Her birth in the camp for refugees is evidence of her family's tenacity and resolve to pursue security and stability in the face of hardship.
