Through her debut novel Kaarthiyin Aaraichi, author Meena Subramanian has created a storyline that offers two excellent and unhampered experiences to the readers. On the one hand the efforts that a student from a middle-income family takes to pursue and complete his PhD thesis; and as a consequence, how, even as he struggles in a land where he barely understands and speaks the local language, his research findings is of help to the local police to investigate and apprehend the key conspirators behind a mafia gang who have been committing crimes and making money from environmental degradation of the city's natural resources. Meena has smartly created for us a fast-paced and easily readable novel for us. Excellent!
