Publisher's Synopsis

This volume offers a close look at the work of German neo-expressionist pioneer Karl Horst Hödicke. It presents sixty full-color reproductions of his paintings and sculptures, along with essays by art historians tracing his career and analyzing his work and its context.
Hödicke came to Berlin at age twenty to study at the Hochschule der Künste, and in 1964 he founded an influential artists' exhibition space, Großgörschen 35. After a sojourn in America, he returned to Germany and began experimenting with plastic processes and, coming full circle, started teaching at the Hochschule der Künste. His influence can still be seen today-he's considered the driving force behind the neo-expressionism of the 1980s, and artists are still wrestling with his works and ideas. This catalog accompanies a substantial, career-spanning show at the Berlinische Galerie, drawn largely from the gallery's own substantial collection of Hödicke's work.
