When Mr and Mrs Bone go down with the Titanic, the six Bone children are left on their own. Grandfather Bone wants to split them up - he'll take the boys, and their maternal grandparents can have the girls. But Binnie Bone, the eldest at 17, stands her ground and says she will bring up the family. And for the next four years she runs the Edwardian household, looking after her brothers and sisters. She also manages to start a very gentle romance with the vicar. At the outbreak of the First World War, Binnie's two elder brothers and her sweetheart all volunteer. Romantic Alex, who sees war as a chance for heroism, is killed by a sniper's bullet, Charles loses an arm in an aeroplane accident, but the vicar comes home to marry his bride.
