Publisher's Synopsis
This path-breaking new book considers the working of 64 courts in five of the six Circuits of the Crown Court, the superior court for jury trial of criminal offences in England and Wales. It is based on the statistics covering plea, plea change, waiting time, judicial acquittals before and during trial, jury verdicts and dissent, as well as judicial sentencing for each court over the five years of the Crown Prosecution Service. As well as considering the politics of the jury for the first time, it pays particular attention to the administrative relations between judge and jury, presenting interesting insights on both topics. - - The judiciary are also analysed in depth and interesting links between their verdicts and sentencing patterns are revealed as are consistent variations between courts in different regions and locality. For sentencing the author uses another data source to break these trends into an 11 type model.
