For my own part I was during twenty years as resigned as any hopeless coolie to a meager diet. Then one day in summer, as I brooded upon the coming pangs of autumn, I made the desperate resolution to gorge myself. I gathered a hundred sentences to exhibit verbs, fifty that were packed with the right kinds of nouns, fifty that contained subjects after the verbs; by hundreds and fifties I gathered them in. It was a banquet to me. For perhaps the first time in history a teacher of gram mar was having all he wanted to eat.
