Publisher's Synopsis

Alice MacGowan (1858-1947) was an American novelist. She was born in Ohio and brought up in Tennessee. Her father, Colonel MacGowan, was an officer in the Army of the Cumberland, and the editor of the Chattanooga Times for more than twenty years. Influenced by the picturesque southern mountain region where she was brought up, MacGowan wrote so much and so naturally about the mountain dwellers of the Southland. Her works include: The Last Word (1902), Judith of the Cumberlands (1908), The Wiving of Lance Cleaverage (1909), The Sword in the Mountains (1910), Million Dollar Suitcase (1922), Shaken Down (1925), The Seventh Passenger (1926) and Who is the Man? (1927).
