Publisher's Synopsis

In Ireland, Mum's children, except for Josie, starve to death. Mum and Josie do whatever it takes to survive, including becoming "hoors" in order to have even a few bits of food. Josie and her "Mum" save a lady in a horrific brawl and are able to go to America. Josie thrills at sailing and soon has all the sailors eating out of her hand--and breaks several hearts when she turns down proposals of marriage. She is so full of life that she enjoys everything and she turns New York on its ear with the help of Newsie. On the trip to Texas she thrills with just being alive and see her wonderful, big country. She breaks more hearts along the way. An Indian raid leaves her alone and penniless--after which she reverts to becoming a "hoor" to survive--and soon turns down numerous proposals. Then she is captured by Indians and shortly charms them into being her friends. After they free her, she finally finds her true love and marries but later becomes a friend and protector as an Indian agent to those that captured her. It is in a visit to the Indians that she discovers a long suppressed secret. Round two of the brawl occurs with predictable results. The story closes as Josie is complimented by a former Indian enemy. But instead of fading into the sunset, she is appointed as Senator from Texas, does great, and even becomes President and prevents world war. Readers may ask themselves, "Would I have done what Josie did to survive?"Readers may also think that if made into a movie, the role of Josie might merit Oscar consideration.
