At the usual age he' Obtained orders in the Church of Rome as a' secular'priest, and there is some reason to think that he held the appointment of Chaplain or Rood-priest in the chapel of St. Nicholas at Samuelston, near Haddington, which he seems to have combined with the employment of private tutor in the family of'the Kers Of Samuelston. In the protocol books of Hadding ton his name occurs thrice - in 1540, 1541, and 1542, once under the style Of Sc/zz'r John Knox, as one of the Pope's knights, being the usual designation of priests who had not attained the higher academical degree Of Magister; and as late as March 27th, 1543, he pens and signs a notarial instrument of assignment as an apostolic notary, describing himself as Joannes Knox, sacri altaris minister, sancti Andreae dioceseos, auctoritate apostolica notarius.
