Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Jim Bullseye in Boston: A Dialect Poem

Jim bullseye, fresh from his ranch by the Rockies, visits Bos ton for two purposes first, to take part in the Grand Army Encamp ment proceedings, hoping to see familiar faces of comrades who, during the War of the Rebellion, shared with him the vicissitudes of life in camp and field; and second, to thoroughly inspect the old town of Boston, of whose culture, energy, wealth and Puritan principles he had heard so much.

Arriving in Boston a week before the opening of the Encampment, ample opportunity was afforded him to thoroughly explore the city.

On the evening of August 13th (the night following the grand parade) our hero stands just inside the door of Mechanics' Build ing (camp Phil. Sheridan), his pants tucked into his high-topped boots, his broad-brimmed slouch hat pushed slightly toward the back of his head, a pipe in his left hand, his empty right sleeve pinned up.
