Martin (Marty) Lamont has Asperger's Syndrome. He is a student at the Academy for Academically Gifted Children, a part of Southern University. The Spring semester of 1962, his classes were Polynomial Calculus, Human Anatomy, Governmental Systems in the US and La Littérature Française: L'Histoire du Roman au XIXe siècle. The youngest of three sons with no sisters, his contact with girls his own age has always been minimal. His cousin, Jennifer (Jenny) Roberts is also 12 years old, and while she isn't on Marty's academic level, she is exceptionally bright and empathetic for someone her age. The youngest of three sisters with no brothers and attending Emma Hart Willard Preparatory School for Girls, an all girl boarding school, there just aren't any boys in her life. The two of them live in mirror worlds except for the first week in August. Every year since he and she were 7 years old, their extended family has had a reunion at a lodge on the Tennessee River. It's the highlight of their year because they get to see each other.
