Publisher's Synopsis

In 1960, Jean Tinguely's sculpture "Hommage a New York" was erected in the garden of the New York MoMA. It was made entirely of scrap metal and destroyed itself with pressing of a button. Both his robot-like drawing machines from the late 1950s and his complex environments are absurdly playful or even monstrously aggressive, and leave the borders of conventional art behind. Analyses of individual work series and comparisons with other contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst and Jason Rhoades are also included.
